And this is why a man leaves father and mother and cherishes his wife. No longer two, they become "one flesh."
Ephesians 5:33
The Message

Weddings

"The bond and covenant of marriage was established by God in creation, and our Lord Jesus Christ adorned this manner of life by his presence and first miracle at a wedding in Galilee. It signifies to us the mystery of the union between Christ and his Church, and Holy Scripture commends it to be honored among all people."

Celebration of MarriageSt. John's Episcopal Church is a beautiful historic building and a lovely setting for the joyous celebration of Holy Matrimony. In the Episcopal Church, a wedding is a sacramental rite, a service in which the words and outwardly visible actions convey inward and spiritual meanings. When a couple is joined together in Christ and build their family upon His grace, they enter a new and wonderful way of life.

Such blessings do not come spontaneously, though. They must be sought, labored for, and treasured. At St. John's we have a strong commitment to preparing couples for marriage. We want to help you develop a solid foundation for your new life together, a task that takes some time and work.

Through a process of prayer, worship, study, pastoral care, and counseling you will discuss the simple details of the ceremony, the Christian understanding of marriage, practical issues like communication, faithfulness, love, roles and responsibilities. We are very committed to your lifelong union and want you to have the best start possible.

Since marriage takes place within the context of the whole Christian life, it is preferrable that at least one of you be an active member of this parish. You will be supported both before and after the wedding by this community of prayer and worship.

If you have questions about marriage and weddings, please contact our parish office to arrange a meeting with a priest. We also have a "Wedding Book" available with more detailed information.
